Anything,
Anywhere,
Anytime.
A Sticker/Media Project
16” x 16”
I am of the west, born and raised in Southern California, attending university in Utah and Washington State, and now residing in Utah. Both my parents were also born and raised here with their people mostly from California and Wyoming. I have walked the land in all eleven states that make up this territory and I am familiar with many of the landmarks within this expansive geography. When I am anywhere in this region, I pretty much know where I am and feel at home. But my people are not the first to feel this way on this land and the overlapping histories of first caretakers and Europeans are full of conflict, marking a radical transition in how this geography is defined and understood.
Back in the early 60s, a Washington bureaucrat coined the phrase “Lands of many uses-and many users.” An abbreviated version of that catchy phrase, “Land of many uses” can be seen on signs marking federal lands across the Western United States. I have come to the realization that I too am one of those users. This project is a capsule of my time and place in the American West. The title, Anything, Anywhere, Anytime, was on the side of a moving truck that I passed while driving through the Virgin Gorge. I have incorporated the phrase into this project with the intention to reference the current trend that the West is now a land of resources, recreation, and photo-ops. This vast geography has been deemed a “void,” in need of human definition, it has had a grid laid over it, converting it into a “place,” with many uses, always in demand and public ready.
Each yield sign has been extracted from collages made while traveling throughout the Western United States. In the center of each yield shape is a QR code that takes the viewer to nine thirty-second video sequences with a split image of two segments, one documenting places of personal significance that I consider sublime and the other segment being images of locations with a significant human footprint. Found in the description of each sequence are the names and geographic coordinates.
